Welcome to Nerds in the Wood, a web site devoted to GPS technologies for hiking, geocaching and other outdoor activities. We feature news, reviews, articles and a blog, helping to keep you informed about the latest in handheld recreational GPS technology and computer-based topographical mapping software.
Nerds in the Wood supports the Coalition to Save Our GPS. The satellites that provide the signals for our GPS devices operate at distances of thousands of miles from us, and are very weak in relation to terrestrial radio signals. Broadband interests want to use frequencies that are close to GPS frequencies in the radio frequency spectrum. These signals can potentially overwhelm your GPS' ability to resolve the satellites, and therefore pose a direct threat to the usefulness of GPS devices which cost individual users hundreds and even thousands of dollars.
Visit saveourgps.org for more information and to add your support.
